MADURAI: A 52-year-old woman attempted self-immolation on the Madurai collectorate premises on Monday over the failure of police to act on a complaint filed by her.
The woman, A Ramu from Kosakulam, came to the collectorate carrying kerosene in a bottle and doused herself in it. Police personnel deployed at the collectorate stopped her when she was trying to set herself ablaze.

Later, the Tallakulam police took her into custody. During interrogation, she told the police that a couple, Ganesh and his wife Kaladevi, who got acquainted with her, used her five and half cents of land in Mathur area as a collateral for a car loan. Later, instead of returning the land, they forged her signature and grabbed the property.
The woman tried to commit self-immolation as the Oomachikulam police had not taken action on her complaint, she said.
